The Miracle Worker

The Royal Victoria Marathon is one of the most popular and scenic running events on the west coast. It attracts runners and walkers from all over Canada and the United States. Shorter racing options on Sunday, October 12 include a Half Marathon, 8K Road Race, and a 1.2K THRIFTY FOODS Kids Run. Festivities kick off on October 10 and 11 at the Victoria Conference Centre with the RVM Race Expo and Race Package Pickup. Port Alberni's Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest is a time of music and merrymaking featuring The Alpiners Band from Vancouver BC., under the direction of Al Pichler. This versatile group plays everything from oompapa to sing-a-longs and modern tunes. The Edelweiss Dancers provide entertainment with the Schuplattler dancers from the Bavarian and Tyrolean Alps. The Silverstar Band also from Vancouver, BC., are known to be quite versatile in their playing as well, from old-fashioned polkas or waltzes to rock music. The Swiss Horn players with their 12 foot horns will play tunes from the Swiss alps. *Free Oktoberfest Afternoon Show on Saturday, October 18, 1 p.m. at: Alberni Athletic Hall.

Salmon Run
Goldstream Provincial Park, from late October through December, some 20,000 salmon make the journey from the Pacific Ocean up Finlayson Arm to spawn in the river they were born in 3/4 years earlier. Park naturalists offer hourly programs during the weekend at the park's Nature Centre describing the life cycle of chum salmon and their spawning activity with a special noon program at the picnic site. Pumpkin Art at Ogden Point
The pumpkins are back! Well known locally as the former Pumpkin Art event at Government House, hundreds of intricately carved lit up pumpkins are returning to Victoria this fall as part of a five city tour in support of UNICEF's BC's Unite for Children, Unite Against Aids campaign. Visit over 35 themed, lit up displays including cartoon characters, former prime ministers, the Royal Family, local personalities and much more. Fun for the whole family. The 12th Pumpkin Yard
The 12th Pumpkin Yard: Festival of Jack O'Lanterns; Over a hundred works of pumpkin art, using 100% real pumpkins. On Hallowe'en night, October 31st, in Errington, parents bring their costumed kids to the Community Park at 6:30pm where they run the gaunlet past the 'spooks' hidden along the dark trails. At each spook they'll get a treat. At the end of the trail, near the market site, they can get a hot chocolate from the coffee shop, warm themselves by the bonfire, and watch the fireworks display. Come and enjoy the fun and festivities on Halloween!
